Vein Treatment - Details
EVLT® is a trademark of AngioDynamics, Inc.
Vein Treatment Options:
EndoVenous Laser Treatment - EVLT®
Or Radio Frequency Ablation - RFA
Advanced Procedure Takes Less Than an Hour
Varicose veins affect 15 percent to 25 percent of all adults, according to the Society of Interventional Radiology. They are caused by venous insufficiency, a common condition resulting from decreased blood flow from the leg veins up to the heart. Blood pools in veins, creating the enlarged, swollen vessels known as varicose veins.
Virginia Interventional and Vascular Associates (VIVA) uses advanced outpatient procedures to eliminate varicose veins that take less than an hour and offer a high success rate. These procedures are EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT®) and Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA).
The following details about EVLT® are excerpted and reprinted with permission of AngioDynamics, Inc.
Efficacy
During the procedure, a laser or radiofrequency probe is fired along and inside the varicose vein. The energy from the laser or probe damages the vein walls, shrinking them closed to prevent blood from flowing through.
Research shows a success rate of 93%-98% in individuals undergoing EVLT®(based on clinical data with up to five years of follow-up), reports AngioDynamics, Inc. Data shows RFA is an equivalent procedure and offers a low rate of pain and bruising.
Risks
Like all other minimally invasive procedures, EVLT®/RFA can potentially result in some minor bruising, which usually goes away during the first several weeks. With EVLT®/RFA, you will feel a "pulling" sensation as well as delayed tightness about 4 to 7 days after the varicose vein treatment procedure is completed. These side effects are normal and are expected after a successful treatment procedure.
Insurance
When medically necessary for symptom relief, EVLT®/RFA is usually reimbursed by the majority of carriers, including Medicare - which limits cost for the patient. You should contact your insurer in order to obtain more details.
