What are Interventional Radiologists?
They are doctors who use their skills in reading medical images and performing procedures to diagnose and treat diseases.
IRs combine the expertise of a radiologist with that of a surgeon - providing patients with possible alternatives to major surgery.
Ultrasound Exams for Painless Diagnosis
Noninvasive ultrasound exams help IRs detect serious vascular conditions and determine treatment options.
Rapid Recovery. Rapid Results.
IRs are trained and board-certified to provide “minimally invasive, targeted treatments.”
This means they have the skills needed to perform very delicate procedures:
- without major surgery.
- using only local anesthesia whenever possible; and
- often times, without hospital stays.
IRs also perform other procedures that support cancer and dialysis treatments.
Improving Lives. Saving Lives.
IRs improve the quality of life of patients with a variety of conditions.
- Peripheral Vascular Disease
- Compression Fractures from Osteoporosis
- Cancer
- Uterine Fibroids
- Varicose Veins
- Kidney Disease/Failure
- Many Other Conditions
In fact, IRs developed the use of angioplasty and stents to open blocked arteries.
Comprehensive Vascular Surgery
Some practices like Virginia Interventional and Vascular Associates have vascular surgeons as well as IRs on staff. Working together, IRs and vascular surgeons can provide a wide range of vascular treatments and streamlined care.
Conditions evaluated and treated include:
- Peripheral Arterial Disease
- Carotid Artery Disease
- Varicose Veins/Spider Veins
- Abdominal Aneurysm
- Other Vascular Diseases
