What are Interventional Radiologists?

They are specially trained radiologists who perform minimally invasive, targeted treatments with the use of image guidance.

IRs use their expertise in reading X-rays, ultrasound and other medical images to guide small instruments such as catheters through blood vessels or other pathways - diagnosing and treating medical conditions percutaneously.

IRs are board certified and fellowship trained in percutaneous interventions using guided imaging. Their specialty is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Medical Association.

IR Procedures Span Multiple Disciplines

IRs invented angioplasty and the first catheter-delivered stent. Today, they perform a variety of minimally invasive, targeted procedures:

  • Uterine Artery Embolization for Uterine Fibroid Treatment
  • Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty for Compression Fractures
  • Evaluation and Treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease
  • Radiofrequency Ablation for Cancer Therapy
  • Chemoembolization for Cancer Therapy
  • Laser Ablation for Varicose Veins
  • Noninvasive Ultrasound Exams to Diagnose Vascular Conditions

Reduced Patient Risks, Improved Recovery

Compared with traditional surgical procedures, IR treatments offer several advantages:

  • Most IR procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a brief hospital stay.
  • Most IR procedures require only local anesthesia.
  • Patient risks, pain, and recovery time are reduced

Combining IR with Vascular Surgery For Comprehensive Vascular Care

Some practices like Virginia Interventional and Vascular Associates have vascular surgeons as well as IRs on staff.  IRs and vascular surgeons combine their expertise to provide a wide range of vascular treatments and streamlined care.

Conditions evaluated and treated include:

  • Peripheral Arterial Disease
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Varicose Veins/Spider Veins
  • Abdominal Aneurysm
  • Other Vascular Diseases
