Uterine Artery Embolization FAQs
-
How long will I need to be off of work? Most patients take off 5-7 business days following the uterine artery embolization.
-
How durable is the result? When the uterine artery embolization is performed for uterine fibroids the result is very durable. The uterine fibroids will shrink by 50% after 6 months. 90% of patients with bleeding symptoms prior to the procedure will have improvement in the symptoms. 80-90% of patients with bulk symptoms like frequent urination, urinating in the middle of the night, and pelvic pressure will have improvement in their symptoms. It is possible for new fibroids to begin growing after the procedure but all of the fibroids present at the time of the procedure will be treated.
-
Will I still have a menstrual cycle? This procedure does not take away your menstrual cycle. Your bleeding will likely decrease some in the 6 months following the procedure as your fibroids shrink. Immediately following the procedure, most patients will have some sort of vaginal discharge. It may be clear, tan, pink, or brown. You may notice small fragments of tissue in this discharge from the dying fibroids. This discharge may last up to 1 month. As long as there is no foul odor to the discharge, this is a normal post procedure occurrence.
-
When can I exercise? We recommend that you not perform any strenuous activity for 5 days after your procedure to decrease the risk of bleeding from the artery in your groin. This includes intense workouts and/or heavy lifting. Normal activities of daily living are able to be performed without restriction. After the 5 day period, there are no restrictions on activity.
-
When can I have intercourse? To decrease the risk of infection we recommend that you do not put anything in your vagina for 7 days after the procedure. (No tampons, no douche, no sex)
-
Do I need another MRI after the procedure? We do not routinely obtain a follow-up MRI after the procedure. We will assess you clinically at your follow-up appointment. If your symptoms are improving, this is a clinical indication that your fibroids are shrinking.
-
When will I have a follow-up appointment? After you are discharged from the hospital, you will need to call VIVA at 540-654-9118 to make your follow-up appointment. We would like to see you 6-8 weeks after your procedure date. You will still need to follow-up annually with your primary care provider or gynecologist for your well woman exams.
